A Place that Shares its Strengths with the Community
The mission statement of Wa-Klo is to develop a girl’s connection with community, the environment, and within herself. While each camper develops ties with her bunk and the camp community, she will take these newfound connections from the camp community and share them with the local one.
Camp Wa-Klo has an over 30-year relationship with the Jaffrey Town Fair. Each year the campers in grades 9-12 help run the fair booths, sell tickets, and volunteer for the dunking tank. Every camper at Wa-Klo attends the fair. Each girl enjoys shopping for hidden treasures in the flea market, eating homemade goodies, getting her face painted, riding in the antique car, and playing the games in the booths. The funds generated from the Jaffrey Town Fair help over 13 organizations in the community.
The Wa-Klo Leadership Training Group (LTG’s, 10-12th graders) and the Upper Pioneers (9th graders) have been donating their time to the Lake Host Program that helps prevent damaging marine life from entering Thorndike Pond through boats.
The LTG’s also volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the Community Kitchen in Keene, NH.
Wa-Klo is developing more community service project opportunities for campers in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades for the summer of 2010. Projects may include working more with Habitat for Humanity and the Community Kitchen, and expanding to animal shelters, projects for children, the Red Cross, and other local charities.
