A Positive Place
Where Committed Advocates for Girls Lead.
The directors of Camp Wa-Klo are advocates for girls. Dr. Maurer and Miss Chenet truly understand the personal rewards, such as gaining confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging, of a summer camp experience for girls of all ages. They recognize the unique learning environment that camp offers and constantly seek to provide the girls and young women in their care with the most wonderful summer experience that camp can offer.
Dr. Virginia Maurer - Director

Ginger Maurer was a camper at Camp Wa-Klo in the 1950’s where she was also the c
amp bugler. Ginger grew up in Rockville Centre, NY and became a surgeon. After many years of general surgery, Dr. Maurer focused her talents in breast cancer surgery, where she is currently a breast surgeon on Long Island, NY. She went back to Wa-Klo in the 90’s to check the camp out before sending her two daughters there. Dr. Maurer fell in-love with Camp Wa-Klo all over again. Both her daughters, Kim and Tammy, attended camp for many years, and Tammy now serves as the Camper Advocate at Wa-Klo.
Dr. Maurer believes that Wa-Klo is the ideal setting for girls and young women to challenge themselves, develop individual talents, and strengthen social relationships with others. Dr.
Maurer loves directing a camp, which allows “girls to be girls.”
Susan Chenet - Assistant Director
schenet@campwaklo.com
Susan has worked with Camp Wa-Klo for 26 years during which time she was fortunate to work
with the original owner and director, Miss Kloberg, to absorb the history and traditions of camp.
Miss Chenet attended a Camp Fire camp when she was nine and almost every summer since has been at a camp. In 1982, Susan joined the Wa-Klo family. Through the years, she has served as a counselor, head of waterfront, special events coordinator in theatre and music, head of tripping and water skiing, waterfront and creative arts supervisor. Susan has worked with the American Red Cross and is a lifeguard, water safety, CPR and First Aid Instructor.
Susan has a B.A. in both Speech Education and Theatre Arts, an M.A. in both English and Drama and Theatre Studies, and an M.F.A. in Playwrighting. She taught theatre for fifteen years to high school students in Louisiana and has used her studies in playwriting to focus her talents on dramatic literature for youth. Every summer the girls at Wa-Klo perform an original Chenet Play, which has now become a camp tradition. Chenet recently had a book published: INCORPORATING THEATRE INTO THE CAMP SETTING which gives easy "how to" solutions to infuse the magic of theatre into a camp program and three plays that camps can perform. More info on the book can be found on the NEWS & EVENTS link on the Wa-Klo website.
In 2007, Susan left Louisiana to work for Camp Wa-Klo full-time. She is currently the food manager, program coordinator, creative supervisor, and American Camp Association (ACA) point person to make sure all ACA standards and safety measures are implemented and followed at Wa-Klo.
