Equestrian

Imagine riding a favorite horse through miles of wooded trails and open fields with beautiful views of Mt. Monadnock and Thorndike Pond or perfecting riding and jumping skills in daily lessons. Welcome to Woodwind, Camp WaKlo’s equestrian center. At Wa-Klo, we have a well-rounded equestrian program with trail riding, horsemanship, jumping, gymkhana, and horse shows. Camp Wa-Klo is a complete horseback riding program that has a reputation of excellence and being one of the best in the camping world.

The Facility

Woodwind is comprised of a stable area and tack room that comfortably accommodates our horses. Equitation lessons are held in our spacious riding ring that can be divided to run as many as three lessons at one time. We also have a separate beginning ring that was completed in 2008. Adjacent to the main riding ring is a large field that is used for advanced equitation and jumping lessons. Camp is surrounded by miles of quiet dirt roads and trails that offer an idyllic setting for trail rides in the beautiful New Hampshire countryside.

Equestrian Staff

Our experienced instructors are selected based on their expertise in riding instruction and related equestrian activities, enthusiasm, and love of children. All riding staff members have training in one or more of the following programs: Accredited College or University Riding Program, United States Pony Club, British Horse Society, or Certified Horsemanship Association.

Horse Riding Lessons

Camp Wa-Klo’s lesson program focuses on English riding with an emphasis on balanced seat equitation, jumping, and basic dressage. On the first day of classes, all riders take part in a horse safety orientation.

Each rider is interviewed about her riding experience. Those campers with prior experience are given a riding test to determine their riding level and horse suitability. Riders are then assigned horses that will suit their size and riding ability. Riders progress at their own pace in small classes with an emphasis on learning proper, safe riding skills, self-confidence, and trust in their mount while having fun. In addition to riding, campers learn how to saddle and bridle a horse as well as how to groom it. Staff members discuss what each girl wishes to accomplish with her riding, and together they set attainable goals for each rider to strive for during her summer at camp. At the end of each session, campers will have the opportunity to show off their skills during the horse show. For many campers, one period of riding is simply not enough, so campers may opt to take 2 periods of riding (extra fee applies).

All riders must wear proper attire when riding. This includes a certified ASTM/SEI riding helmet, long pants, jodhpurs or breeches, and tall or short boots with a heel.

Trail Rides

One of the most enjoyable equine related activities is trail riding. Trail rides give our girls a chance to learn how to control a horse at different paces over varying terrain. Prior to riding the trails, each rider is instructed on road safety and proper handling of the horse. Riders who have achieved sufficient control of their mounts will be able to explore the surrounding countryside on regular trail rides where they may spot a deer, turkey, and other wildlife. Whether a relaxed amble down a quiet country road or a brisk canter across a field, riders enjoy wooded trails, streams, and ponds.
